이글루와 폴 오스터

폴 오스터는 그의 소설들에서 삶을 지배하는 요소로서의 우연에 대해 이야기한다. 얼마 전 출간된 그의 에세이집 [빨간 공책] 또한 그가 직접 겪었거나 주위 사람들에게서 전해 들은 기막힌 우연들에 대한 메모다. 우선 내가 몇 년 전, 이곳 이글루스로 옮기기 전에 썼던 글 하나를 소개한다.

이글루에서 살기

언젠가 들었던 이글루 이야기.

이글루에 들어가있으면 이글루 내부가 조금씩 좁아진다고 한다. 입김을 통해 나온 수분이(혹은 기타 등등의, 여하튼 물이) 이글루 벽에 얼어붙어서 조금씩조금씩 벽이 두꺼워지고, 얼마나 걸릴진 모르겠지만 결국 언젠간 움직일 수도 없을 정도로 내부가 좁아져서 갇혀버리게 된다고 한다.
아마 이 이야기를 들었을 때, 혹은 읽었을 때 내가 했던 생각은, 어느 바보가 그 지경이 되도록 숨만 쉬고 있겠느냐는 거였을 것 같다. 그리고 내가 지금 이 이야기를 여기에 쓰고 있는 건, 지금 생각엔 충분히 그런 일이 벌어질 수도 있을 것 같기 때문이다. 뭐 단순히 아파서 뻗어버렸다, 정도만 생각해봐도 조금씩 조여져오는 이글루의 벽을 보면서도 움직이지 못하는, 그렇다고 숨을 쉬지 않을 수도 없어 결국 자신이 내쉰 숨에 의해 죽게 될 어느 에스키모가 그려져버린다.
다시 한 번, 내가 지금 이 이야기를 여기에 쓰고 있는 건, 지금 내 처지가 그 불쌍한 최후를 맞을 에스키모와 좀 비슷하지 않느냐는 생각에서다. 뭐 단순히 지금 방을 한번 둘러만 봐도, 내가 버린 쓰레기에 숨이 막혀 죽어버릴 것 같으니까. 자신이 내쉰 숨에 조여드는 이글루처럼, 죽어가는 에스키모처럼.

그러니까, 부디 구해줘.

방은 결국 치웠으니 나무라진 말자. 이어지는 아래 글은 오늘 읽은 폴 오스터의 <하얀 여백>이란 시의 일부분이다.

하얀 여백 중에서

아무리 작은 것이라도 모든 가능성은 남아 있다. 심지어 하나의 움직임이 명백한 움직임의 부재로 줄어들었다. 가령, 호흡하는 것과 같은 아주 미세한 움직임, 공기를 들이마시고 내쉴 때 우리 몸이 일으키는 움직임이 그런 것이다. 예전에 나는 피터 프로이첸이 쓴 책을 읽은 적이 있다. 유명한 북극 탐험가였던 피터 프로이첸은 그 책에서 그린란드 북부에서 엄청난 눈보라 폭풍에 갇혔을 때를 기술하였다. 홀로 남은 채 식량도 점점 떨어져 가던 중 그는 이글루를 세워 그 안에서 폭풍이 잠잠해지기를 기다리기로 했다. 여러 날이 지났다. 무엇보다도 두려웠던 것은 늑대가 공격할지도 모른다는 사실이었다 ㅡ 그는 이글루 꼭대기에서 어슬렁거리며 타고 오르는 늑대 소리를 들었던 것이다. 그래서 그는 정기적으로 밖으로 나와 큰 소리로 힘껏 노래를 불렀다. 늑대가 겁을 먹어 달아났으면 하는 희망이었다. 그러나 바람이 너무 세차게 불어 아무리 큰 소리로 노래를 불러도 그의 귀에 들리는 것은 바람 소리뿐이었다. 그러나 이것이 심각한 문제라면 이글루의 문제는 한층 더 심각했다. 왜냐하면, 그의 작은 피난처의 벽이 점점 더 그 자신을 향해 좁혀 왔기 때문이다. 바깥의 혹독한 날씨 때문에 그가 숨을 내쉬면 그것이 벽에 그대로 얼어붙었고, 따라서 한 번씩 숨을 쉴 때마다 이글루의 벽이 점점 더 두꺼워졌고, 내부는 점차 좁아져 결국 그의 몸 하나 들어갈 공간도 못 될 정도가 되고 말았다. 얼마나 무시무시한 일인가. 살기 위해 숨을 쉬는 것이 결국엔 자신을 얼음의 관에 갇히게 만들었다는 것을 상상해 보라. 내 생각엔 포의 [지옥의 진자]에 그려진 상황보다 더 끔찍한 상황인 것 같다. 왜냐하면 이 탐험가의 경우, 그의 파멸의 원인이 바로 그 자신이었기 때문이며, 더 나아가 그 파멸의 도구가 그가 자기 목숨을 부지하기 위해 필요로 했던 바로 그것이었기 때문이다. 분명히 사람은 숨을 쉬지 않으면 살 수 없다. 그러나 동시에 그의 경우는 숨을 쉬면 살 수가 없다.

별 생각 없이 시를 읽던 중에 이런 구절을 만나서 놀랍고 반가웠다. 그 불쌍한 에스키모는 피터 프로이첸이란 사람이었고, 사실 에스키모도 아니었던 것이다. 삶은 아마도 이런 크고 작은 우연들의 집합 혹은 연속이다. 내가 지금 '이글루스'에 글을 쓰고 있다는 사실까지 포함해서.

p.s. 폴 오스터에 따르면, 피터 프로이첸은 그 역경을 헤치고 살아남았고, 그 책의 제목은 [북극의 모험]이다.
